Announced makeover of Aveyond 2

Recommended Posts

So, I've just seen a makeover of Aveyond 2 was announced on Facebook. Seems some characters might get changed or replaced as well.

Since it's not April Fools day, I suppose this news wasn't a joke.

For my part, I wouldn't mind a makeover if it meant new quests and more focus on characters interaction. But if it were up to me, what I'd really love to see would be a makeover of Ahriman's prophecy, even if it meant I'd have to buy the new game. I liked the story of that one better than Aveyond 2, but I absolutely hated the battle system, beacuse it was so difficult to use the skills and spells. I replay it very rarely.

These were my two cents.

What do the rest of you think of this news?

P.S.: If there is a makeover, please include a goody that enables you to have all of Iya's dresses, no matter which guild you choose.

I highly doubt Ahriman's Prophecy would ever get a remake considering it's a freeware game. I'm not sure how serious it is to replace Rye, but meh, I'm over Aveyond 2 a long time ago. It was a game made to be sold for $20. In the current clime of $10 games? Not very wise to be remaking them ahead of focusing on Pixel Pygmies and Aveyond 4, just saying. Besides, one of Aveyond 2's selling points is the scenery porn XD Beautiful maps and wonderful aesthetic. Don't wanna be changing that.

Can't say the same about the facesets though, which, in my opinion, is the worst in all AV series (I don't even think it's a custom made set. It looks like it's downloaded off from somewhere else, and for a non-freeware game, that really sucks). If they do remake the game, I'm seriously hoping that will change

Definitely not. It's made with FaceMaker, which is a freeware face generator.

And re: scenery, I... have to say I'm not entirely fond of the tilesets. It's too pixellated and clashes with the characters. RMXP sprites are still smooth, even though not as "glossy" as RMVX/Ace's sprites. It's a bit too much to ask to rework the tilesets, tho.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who complains about the tileset anyway.

As long as they're not changing the main characters themselves (i.e. Rye) and focus on their interaction / development, then I don't have a problem with it.

Also, since Aisling mentioned that AV2 is a $20 game, I'm not so sure if they will still sell the original version along with the improved version (assuming that the makeover pushes through). If they would, it may be possible that they would lower the price... but that's something we still have to see.

Also, this: :D

Also, this just came in from the Aveyond Kingdom facebook page (about 2:24 12/25 GMT+8) :

Instead of replacing a character, I'm going to add a new one. There will be a new residence for your troop to purchase, and I'm going to fix some old complaints that folks had about the game. Happy holidays! This is a small update and won't require a re-purchase. Guesstimated launch date: Jan 31st.

Re AP remake: I don't understand why the battle system gets so much hate, as I enjoyed it immensely. It was more like an actual battle, where you could retreat in the middle of it if you bit off more than you could chew. It made going through old places (and going to new places, too, actually) very quick and less cumbersome than the AV games (for example, if I needed to go back to the home village, I could just run by the bees; if I got too close, the worst that could happen was that they attack me for like 3 HP at most)--no worrying about getting repetitively sucked back into the battle screen. I guess I just got used to getting to the skills. I replay it somewhat frequently just because it's so cute and quick! (Just wanna throw out the minority opinion ^_^)

Re more relevant things: Out of genuine curiosity, why is the Amaranthia team spending time on re-releasing an old game when their energies would be better focused on releasing one of the three games that people have been anxiously waiting for a number of years? I understand that things came up and they were working hard on the game and whatnot, I'm just wondering how production got backed up so much and if they're working on it (an update on how it's moving along would be nice!). I'm not abandoning hope or anything, I hope they aren't having too many difficulties. :)

Other than that, I suppose that it'll be nice to have something new from Amaranthia to keep us entertained; I actually just finished replaying AV2 and it was as good as ever! :)It'll be cool to see how they remake it for sure :)

Maybe they're remaking it to get people interested again? I wouldn't mind a makeover, as long as whatever is changed is true to the nature of Aveyond. As long as they don't change the music :)

Re the AP makeover: I would LOVE this. I could never get through more than half an hour of AP, the graphics gave me a headache, and I died over 20 times fighting that stupid dragonfly :I It would be nice if AP "fit in" more with the other Aveyond games, though I realize how impractical and difficult it would be. But since Amanda is remaking Aveyond 2, which is kind of, from a business kind of view, pointless (I'd love it though ^-^), why not redo Ahriman's Prophecy? The old version could still be available for free, and the revamped one could cost money, if Amanda wanted. They did something similar with the iOS game Nyan Cat.

About the battle system : Goldielox, I agree completely.

Yup, I totally agree about the music, it was wonderful.

@stardale: wooohoo, really!? A new char and new residence!? Great! I loved the interaction in the residences in every game so far.

@moonpeace: What dragonfly? I don't remember one.

And that was what I meant with redoing AP, yeah. Obviously I realise the new version couldn't be free, because then there would be no purpose to redoing it whole for Amanda. But I for one would certainly buy a new version, even if I knew the main story already, cause I really liked the chars and the game apart from the battle system and graphics.

I think it was a dragonfly...it looked like one anyways.

Well, it's an excuse to replay Aveyond 2! I've already replayed the "old" version so many times, so hopefully the makeover will breathe some new life into the game. Only 33 days now!!

I totally support an AV2 update. A new character and a new location sounds awesome (and don't worry, no one's being replaced).

I'd also love for Gavin and Nicholas to be in the party together without using the goodie.

AND I want more Te'ijal and Galahad!

New cover:

Aveyond - Ean's Quest

This was commissioned by Amanda and is the new official cover. What do ya think?

I liked the old cover better, for several reasons. One, the old cover is beautiful, it's my favorite of the Aveyond covers and was even my wallpaper for awhile. It really captures the fairy tale essence of Aveyond 2. I like how it depicts Ean comforting Iya, it shows their characters and is just so...perfect. This one, not so much. It looks too dark, IMHO, especially the background that does NOT loom like Shaelnir, and the Snow Queen does not look like how she is described. (What's with the cleavage, btw? :$ ) She looks really evil, when in fact she isn't, really. Her soul has been deprived of love and the cover should show that. Instead it looks like an epic fantasy, LoTR style cover. Also, Ean looks like a girl. And where's the title that says Aveyond, it's all the way at the bottom! Hopefully they'll add it in.

Eh, it's a small price to pay for a makeover of the game.

And Ean has Legolas hair :P

I can see why you would think that about the old cover, especially with the Disney-esque castle in the background. But, lets face it, Aveyond 2 is not exactly a serious game, the story is pretty lighthearted overall, and the in-game artwork is bright and cheery. Unless they have changed the mood of the game, I just don't think the cover matches.

EDIT: I wanted to add something, but apparently I can't double post, soo...

I found out that Amanda was considering replacing Rye with a witch, although apparently that's changed, and she's not replacing one. She said there would be a new residence, but it is unclear whether Grimm's Farm (Or is it Grimm's Hatchery? I don't remember...)will be replaced. But now, this is making me think it might be :c

And of course questions :P

Will we be able to download it and install the new version separately so we can still have both?

And, is Amanda still working on Pixel Pygmies, or did she put it on hiatus and decided to remake all the Aveyonds?

I think that's changed. In a way, Aveyond 2 was the most different of all of Amanda's games so far. I think it'll have more of a dark vibe now.

To be honest, Heptitus seemed like a whiny kid in the end, not the best look for a villain

When you said "it's changed", did you mean the mood of the game or Ean's hair?

Why would they change the feel of the game just because it's different? The fairy tale vibe is what makes Aveyond 2 tick; making it darker for no reason would be killing everything the fans love about it. I hope that does not happen :c

Heptitus is more of a whiny kid than a villain. The Snow Queen was the main antagonist, even though she wasn't really evil she was still a cool villain. Heptitus didn't really do much except be mischievous and obnoxious until the final battle.

(OMG OMG I just realized that "Heptitus" is like hepatitis. I love all of the vocabulary Easter eggs in Aveyond, like Naylith literally meaning "no rock" and Galahad meaning good.)

I've alway thought of her as Hepatitis, easier to pronounce :P

The cover and the fact that they were trying to replace Rye (Happy guy) with a witch. Just seemed more dark overall. No idea about whether this is true or not, just seemed like the changes we do know show the game getting darker

Amanda later decided not to replace Rye, and add a new character (the witch, maybe?) instead.

Just guessing though, the witch would probably be either a. In love with Gavin, or b. like Harriet, or Gretchen, basically an un-mischievous witch. Or maybe a dysfunctional witch, but Amanda's putting one of those in a aveyond 4, so probably not.

Yeah, but a witch itself is considered a bit dark. My pet theory at that time was that Amanda was responding to the criticism of Heptitus appearing suddenly and was going to have Heptitus be with us in the party. No idea what the idea was.

Who knows though? I guess we can just wait. I think it'll be darker though

She did say that she was fixing some "old complaints" (no idea what those are), so I don't know. But I would love Heptitus in the party! She could be like Gyendal, pretending to be on the good side, but at the last second be like, haha, lol nope.

(Oh yeah and if she's fixing stuff, then maybe she could make the hope blessing a different color because it's kind of hard to see)

Some people have criticized AV2 for the characters not being as interesting as in the other games. Other common complaints included Heptitus appearing out of nowhere in the final battle and not being able to have Gavin and Nicholas in the party together without using the goodie.

I pretty much agree with those complaints myself (I still like the game, but it's definitely my least favorite in the AV series). I look forward to whatever improvements we have in store.

Meh, I liked the characters of Aveyond 2 better than those in the Orbs of Magic series, but I'm pretty sure that's just me.

Since there's a new character, I would like to be able to have at least 8 party members, or even 9 if Gavin and Nicholas can be in at the same time.

Ditto all the common complaints. The AV2 crew were nice people, but I thought they were bland. I just don't care.

The AV3 people makes me mad sometimes, but at least they have personality.

But at any rate, I already have grievance against the new cover title. The old one was good. Unless Amanda's shifting the focus to make the game more about Ean than it is about Iya, the cover title is misleading. And heck, the artist even got Ean's weapon wrong. He uses a claw, not a sword.

Minor nitpick, but still :S

Yeah, definitely agree about the cover art. It doesn't even look the person who designed it played Aveyond 2, as they got most of the little things (i.e. Ean's weapon, Ean's hair, the background, the Snow Queen's appearance) wrong. What especially bothered me is the hair, it annoyed me enough when Te'i'jal's hair didn't match her faceset or her sprite, and now it happened to Ean too. Now he just looks like a generalized elfin LoTR-style character. The art is beautiful, it just doesn't match the game.

And I hope Amanda doesn't change the game so it's about Ean. He was only there to help Iya, the story mainly centered around her. If she did shift the focus to Ean, it would require a lot of it adjustments.

Ean's faceset AND sprite are both generic, so there's nothing wrong with his appearance, IMO. There's no problem with the Snow Queens herself, what with her sprite being Vague McVague forever as well. I don't particularly like the over-sexyfied dress but eh. I can deal with it.

It's just the fact that it doesn't match the game at all that bothers me so much :S

I'm crossing my fingers for the new witch to be Heptitus! :P That would make for a pretty darn epic plot twist. I'm actually really excited to see the changes. But judging by the quick makeover and the lack of need for beta-ing, there probably aren't much.
