Anime is a sin?!

Recommended Posts

@rifle: i assume not since you're not hurting anyone physically, mentally, monetarily, etc. by watching anime.

Yes there are some aspects of anime that are overdone, and I do not see those more than once. The ones that I love all address the social topics that are really in people's minds on a sub-level in such a way that it is entertaining. Sadly, for some narrow minded people everything that is a pleasure will be a sin at some point.

I'm also Christian... well, Catholic to be exact. Oftentimes I find myself disagreeing with all of this... paranoia. It's quite saddening that there are hypocrites like that out there. They're so hell bent on trying to rid the world of "evil"... >_>;;

Anyway, I think in the most basic sense, anime (and every other story as well anything created by the mind) is "evil" since it's not true. Storytelling is synonymous with lying. And lying, according to Christian teachings is bad... but that's just me.

^^;; it doesn't stop me from liking what I like... :P after all, that's what the free will is for.

@erunochii: how is storytelling lying? according to webster, lying is 1 : to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive

2 : to create a false or misleading impression

Storytelling, unless one is trying to actively trick someone into thinking its true, isn't lying because the storyteller isn't intending to present their words as fact. They are trying to teach via analog (even Jesus used storytelling by way of parables to get his point across), explain how the world works (there's no intent to deceive as they didn't know better), or just entertain.

If we go with the second definition, than only myths would count as lying, but only in their appropriate times (greek myths in ancient greek times,etc.). Nowadays, most of us treat them as entertainment so myth storytellers aren't lying.

Ummm... Jesus used parabels (in his teachings), which are a form of storytelling... So for Christians to say that storytelling=lying would mean that Jesus was a liar.

@mae: exactly.

@erunochii: you're not making sense.

Jesus really really hated lying and even attributed it to the devil.

linky to john 8:44 as proof

Jesus practiced exactly what he teach. So if storytelling was lying, he definitely wouldn't be doing it.

so are you saying jesus was a hypocrite? cuz that's ...like blasphemy? haha. I'm pretty sure jesus hated hypocrites too. lol.

@KTC: Oh sorry, did you already make that point? *Is very lazy and hasn't read through the whole thread*...

@mae: yeah I did here lol.

I just put more emphasis on it with the next post since I really don't get the logic of storytelling= lying when jesus told stories/parables a lot so that implies he's a liar and a hypocrite.

I think that many people think Anime is a sin because of the wide variety of types of anime. There is the way that it often is a form of manga, and many types of Manga are sexually explicit and deal with gay and lesbian topics which get many peoples hair all knotted up. They don't offend me in the least.

I like many anime shows that are available in the US, and I have always liked most manga.

I do not watch or read things that are creepy to me on a personal level. That is the choice of each individual person, and only a fool would continue to watch or read that which offends their sensibilities. I have no time for fools. (the fool excepted of course)

I do not think that I have the right to tell you what I think is moral and correct for you because you are not my children. And since my children are all adults with the ability to think well and logically, I have not felt compelled to tell them what I think for years!

Anime is not a sin; the sin is in watching it if it offends you.

In my opinion, and this is only my opinion, Love in any form is not a sin. Hate is a sin.

That said, There is a reason that we as parents try to shelter our children from graphic violence and pornography while they are young and easily disturbed.

Children learn what they live.

It is important to let them know that once they are adults their choices are theirs and theirs alone, but while they are children some things are not appropriate for them to view, even in an 'animated' version.

Did I answer your question properly?

Wow. I heard of people hating anime, and of people thinking it's a sin, but I've NEVER heard of people protesting it. I think it's more that they are bored and need something to protest. I'd protest them if I could because they keep on making my favorite songs and videos get deleted. I think they need to take up a better cause (there's tons I can think of) rather than ranting about anime. :roll: I never got why people thought it was evil, I always liked it and I still do. o.o It's outrageous that they'd come into an anime convention and protest.

Exactly. Im a Christian. i am a deep Loving man of God. I dont hate anime or bash on it being a sin.

To be honest, in my opinion, i guess its whatcha draw that can be immoral, teaching kids things they ought not to know till their wiser [so to speak...]

There are Christians and other religions out there who are a bit too zealous and get ahead of themselves...

The Lord never came to say "you! Get behind me" He came to save. and loved us so much that he would let us have our way in life however we see fit.

Again. anime is not a sin entirely... I suppose its whatcha draw that depends. Like artwork, Literature, etc.

Agreed with Omega.

If anime is based on satan worshipping and stuff like that that is just one show and you shouldn't blame it on anime.

I have yet to come across one though.

So Ipso Ergo:

If its a story on mythilogical Dragons-- Hush, it doesnt matter about your values or outlooks. its a story.

Not if ya notice a pentagram on the cover and people acting completely different [Head spinning, Unholy rituals, etc] THEN you can bash [only i suggest taking a different approach, as in bash, i mean do something about it and protest it.]

Of course adultrous literature and artwork, etc.

@ omega - I just want you to know that a pentagram is not an inherently evil thing. Some ignorant and untutored persons have historically declared that it is only used in satanic rituals.

That is not a truth. Many other religions, all of which equate the worship of satan with evil, consider the pentagram to be a sacred symbol.

Thus the symbol has a different meaning for different people.

Certain people will always want to push their opinion off on others, and often if they are frustrated by the lack of a good reception to their ignorant blather they will use violence to prove the 'rightness' of their opinion.

This is because some people are threatened by different opinions and different lifestyles. The real problem is ignorance and intolerance, not different cultures, religions or lifestyle.

Protesting anime is a waste of time. Using good judgement and promoting good judgement is the way I deal with the issue in our home.

I'm a Christian (albeit not a very zealous one) and thinks that these guys are wasting their time.

I have watched anime and read mangas that contain "might-be-considered-sinful" stuff, but I wouldn't go this far. For me, there are times where I feel a bit offended when reading mangas, but I just think of them as what they are : a story. A story made to entertain the readers. They're only for entertainment purpose. If they were brainwashing tools, then, yes, I'd agree with those guys. But they're not. If someone's getting brainwashed by a manga/anime, it's either because he has no life or he's an unsupervised kid.

Plus, protesting the entire anime/manga just because of a few is a dumb thing. How could things like Doraemon or Hamtaro be harmful to anyone?
